Parrot Linux 6.2 Release Notes

Released on 23 October 2024, Parrot Linux 6.2 introduces Rocket, a graphical launcher for security tools packaged as Docker containers, and moves to the Linux 6.10 kernel.

Rocket: run tools in containers

Rocket is a Python/PyQt6 application that lists containerised tools and starts them with one click instead of hand-typing docker run commands. It works on Parrot and, with docker.io installed, on other Linux distributions, Windows and macOS. New Rocket launchers were added to the Parrot menu.

Other changes

  • Linux 6.10 kernel.
  • AnonSurf 5.0 (CLI and GUI).
  • Airgeddon 11.30 for wireless auditing.
  • Firefox ESR 128.3, VirtualBox 7.0.20, VLC 3.0.21, LibreOffice 24.8, Flatpak 1.14.10.
  • Core updates to initramfs-tools, libc, Go, Node.js and tmux.

Known issue

The VirtualBox OVA images published with 6.2 were buggy; the problem was fixed in 6.3. If you need a VM today, download the current OVA or install from the ISO following Parrot on VirtualBox.

How to upgrade to Parrot Linux 6.2

sudo parrot-upgrade

Fresh ISOs are on the download page.

Upgrade checklist

  1. Back up /home and any tool configs you customised (Burp projects, Metasploit database, wordlists).
  2. Make sure you have at least 5 GB free on /; kernel and tool updates are large.
  3. Run the upgrade on a wired connection or stable Wi-Fi; if it is interrupted, re-run sudo apt --fix-broken install then sudo parrot-upgrade again.
  4. Reboot. Confirm the kernel with uname -r and the release with cat /etc/os-release.
  5. If a tool misbehaves after the upgrade, check troubleshooting or run it through Rocket in a container.

Fresh install instead?

Download the current ISO from the download page, verify the hash (guide), write it to USB (guide) and follow the installation guide. Minimums are in system requirements.

Official images are published by the Parrot project on its download page.
